RCMBA Road Trip - Spence Mountain Klamath Falls, OR

  • Shoalwater Bay Trailhead Klamath Falls, OR 97601 USA (map)

Join us on another fun RCMBA road trip. We’ll be going back to Spence Mountain in Klamath Falls, Oregon to ride with the awesome people of Klamath Trails Alliance (KTA). For those who don’t know, Spence Mountain boasts 55 miles of professionally built trails with many that are mountain bike specific downhill trails. The trails vary from simple single track trails with expansive views of the Cascade Mountains and Klamath Lake to flowy machine built tabletop jump lines to rocky, janky black diamond trails. There’s something for everyone. Additionally, if you feel you need to hone your mountain bike skills, there’s nearby Moore Mountain that boasts another 32 miles of trails primarily focused on skills advancement on the bike. If interested in attending, use the link below so that we can get a head count. KTA will provide breakfast and lunch on Saturday and Sunday before and after working on the trails. There will be a potluck dinner on Saturday, so bring a dish to share.

Itinerary

May 22 - TRAVEL DAY. It’s approximately a 6 hour drive from Eureka to Spence Mountain. We will convene in one of the many grassy campsites on the left just past the Shoalwater Bay Trailhead parking. Just keep going down the main road past the trailhead parking until you see signs for the Klamath Trails Alliance. Cell phone coverage is spotty or non-existent here, so make sure you input the destination into your phone before driving out. Because it is dispersed camping here, we can’t drop an exact location pin because we don’t know which spot we will get, but KTA plans to go out days in advance to grab a good spot and put a sign on the main road. Campsites are primitive, no hookups, no water. So bring plenty of water and food for the weekend. KTA will be getting a porta-potty for the weekend, so there will be primitive bathroom facilities.

May 23 - BREAKFAST (provided by KTA), VOLUNTEER TRAIL WORK, LUNCH (provided by KTA), PARTY LAPS, AND POTLUCK DINNER. We will start the day breakfast provided by KTA before going out with the KTA crew for a few hours to do some light trail work (brush removal and raking) to help KTA get ready for upcoming races. At around noon, KTA will provide lunch and refreshments to the volunteers. The rest of the day is for grouping together and exploring the trails. Ebikes are allowed, but the climb trails are extremely friendly for just about any rider. However, the elevation is nearly one mile high, so you may feel it.

May 24 - BREAKFAST (provided by KTA), VOLUNTEER TRAIL WORK, LUNCH (provided by KTA), AND PARTY LAPS. We will start the day with breakfast provided by KTA before some more trail work. Again, just some brush clearing and raking of the trails. At lunchtime, KTA will provide trail volunteers with lunch and refreshments. We can then run some more party laps on Spence Mountain, or go check out the nearby Moore Mountain and work on some skill-building together.

May 25 - RETURN TRAVEL DAY. Maybe grab some laps on Mount Shasta on the way back.

We truly hope to see you out there on this extended weekend. These road trips are meant to be a fun way for us to see new trails, meet new people, bring home trail ideas, and foster the love of the sport. If there are any questions, feel free to email us at info@redwoodcoastmtb.org.
